Darling is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Malvern East, on the Glen Waverley railway line. Darling is classed as a Premium Station and is in myki Zone 1+2 overlap.
Station overview
Facilities
Darling is located between Clynden Avenue and the Monash Freeway, with station access from Clynden Avenue.
The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 2 has a smaller brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine was located inside the waiting area, which was able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins, with additional coin-only Metcard ticket vending machines situated in the waiting area and at the entrance to platform 2. These have been replaced by myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting area on platform 1, and at the entrance to platform 2.
A footbridge, signal box and a crossover are all situated at the Flinders Street end of the station.
History
Darling station opened on 24 March 1890, with electrification reaching the station in 1922.[1] The line though the station was originally built to link Burnley station to the Outer Circle line and on to Oakleigh station. The outer part of the line beyond Darling closed on 9 December 1895,[2] and was not extended to Glen Waverley until 1930. Darling was upgraded to a Premium Station in 2008.
