Danzell Gravenberch (born 13 February 1994 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch professional football player of Surinamese descent,[2] who plays as a defender for NEC, on loan from Ajax, in the Dutch Eredivisie, and for Netherlands U-19.[3]

Career

AFC Ajax

Born in Amsterdam, Danzell began playing football in the youth ranks of local amateur side SV Bijlmer, from where he was recruited to join the Ajax Academy in 2002.[4] He began his career in the youth teams of Ajax as a Striker, but was moved back to play as a Defender instead later in his career. While playing for the Ajax A1 youth squad in 2011–12, Danzell helped his side to win the Nike Eredivisie league title,[5] as well finishing as runners-up to Inter Milan in the NextGen Series (the Champions League equivalent for under-20 teams) after losing on penalties (5–3) following a 1–1 deadlock after extra time.[6]

On 7 June 2012, it was announced that Danzell Gravenberch had signed his first professional contract, a three year deal binding him to the club until 30 June 2015.[7] During the preparation for the 2012–13 Danzell Gravenberch went through a transformation, no longer deployed as an attacker, Danzell Gravenberch was moved back to a central defender position under then manager Fred Grim, while playing for Jong Ajax in the Beloften Eredivisie.[8] For the 2013–14 season, Jong Ajax were promoted to the Jupiler League, the second tier of professional football in the Netherlands, resulting in Danzell making his professional debut in league play on 8 August 2013 in an away match against FC Oss. The match ended a 2–0 loss, with Gravenberch playing 46' minutes before getting cautioned, and being replaced by Sven Nieuwpoort.[9]

NEC (loan)

On 17 January 2014, it was announced that Gravenberch had been sent on loan to NEC until the end of the season.[10]

International career

Danzell Gravenberch has played for the Netherlands on various youth levels, having received his first cap on 6 February 2010 for the Netherlands U-16 in a match against Italy U-16 at the Albufeira 4 Nations Tournament in Portugal.[11] On 17 September 2010 Gravenberch had his debut with the Netherlands U-17 squad in another encounter with Italy U-17 this time during the Ursapharm-Vier-Nationen-Turnier in Germany.[12] The next year Gravenberch was selected by Albert Stuivenberg to play for the under-17 squad at the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship, where he helped the Netherlands to their second consecutive continental title in that age group, defeating Germany U-17 in the final 5–4 on penalties, after extra time following a 1–1 deadlock.[13]

Danzell Gravenberch was also selected to represent the Netherlands U-17 in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico where he scored his first goal for the under-17 squad in the second group stage match against North Korea U-17.[14] Danzell appeared in all three group stage matches, of which they managed one victory, a draw and a loss resulting in an early exit from the tournament for the Dutch.[15] On 11 November 2011 Danzell made his debut for the Netherlands U-18 squad in a friendly encounter against Romania U-18. While on 10 September 2012, Gravenberch made his debut for the under-19 squad in a friendly encounter with Scotland U-19.[16] He was selected by head coach of the U-19 team Wim van Zwam to participate in the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship in Lithuania,[17] appearing in all three group stage matches before being eliminated following a result of one win and two losses.[18]
