Daniel Potts (born 13 April 1994)[4] is a professional football player for West Ham United as a full back and a current England U20 representative.
Club career
Potts joined West Ham United as a scholar in May 2010.[5] He made his reserve team debut away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27 April 2011,[6] and his senior debut at home on 17 December 2011, in a 1–0 victory over Barnsley,[7] just a day after signing a professional contract with the club.[8] He received the Young Hammer of the Year award in May 2012 after making 4 appearances during the season. On 23 November 2012 he joined Colchester United on a month long loan deal.[9] He made his debut on 24 November in a 5–1 defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.[10] In January 2013 Potts was recalled from his loan by West Ham.[11] On 23 January 2013 he was taken from the pitch in the 82nd minute with concussion, after a clash of heads with Bacary Sagna, in a Premier League game against Arsenal resulting in 12 minutes of stoppage time being added on after 90 minutes.[12][13]
On 20 November 2013, Potts joined Portsmouth on a month-long loan.[14] He made his debut on 23 November in a 2-1 defeat at Fratton Park against Scunthorpe United.[15] Potts returned to West Ham in December 2013. [16]
International career
As his father was born in the United States, Potts was presumed eligible to play for both the England national football team and the United States men's national soccer team. Potts was invited and took part in a United States under-20 camp in 2011.[17] He made his début as a substitute, playing 21 minutes, for the American U-20 team against France in a friendly game in Vichy.[18][19]
In April 2012, US Soccer officials determined that Potts was not eligible for US citizenship as his father did not meet residency requirements to pass along citizenship to his son, meaning he could not play for the US at any level.[20]
Potts played the first half for the England U18 team in 3-0 win against Poland at Crewe's Alexandra Stadium on 7 March 2012.[21] He more recently represented England for the U19's in a friendly against Finland.[22]
On 28 May 2013, he was named in manager Peter Taylor's 21-man squad for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[23] He made his debut on 16 June, in a 3-0 win in a warm-up game against Uruguay.[24]
