Daniel Mortimer (born 13 June 1989) is an Australian professional rugby league player. He currently plays for Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League and previously played for the Parramatta Eels. He is the son of former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Australian Rugby League player Peter Mortimer. His uncles Steve Mortimer and, Chris Mortimer were also well-known Bulldogs players.

Early career

Mortimer grew up in Orange, New South Wales,[1] and joined the Parramatta Eels in 2007.[2] After a partnership with Albert Kelly in the National Youth Competition (Toyota Cup), and several key injuries and departures in the senior team, he was called up to the first-grade squad to take up the five-eighth position. He made his debut for the Parramatta Eels in Round 12 of the 2009 season against the Cronulla Sharks.[3]

Parramatta Eels

At the time of Mortimer's debut, Parramatta was sitting were coming 13th on the NRL ladder, but a strong run of form saw them finish in eighth position and qualify for the finals series, before defeating the teams coming between first and third to qualify for the grand final, which they lost to the Melbourne Storm. Mortimer's rookie season saw him score 10 tries from 16 matches.[4]

In 2010 after a less than spectacular start to the season, Mortimer reflected on 2009 saying, "We hit form that not many teams have done in the history of footy, so to be judged on that's pretty harsh".[5]

Sydney Roosters

Mortimer drifted out of Parramatta's first-grade squad in the 2011 season, playing for the Wentworthville Magpies in the New South Wales Cup. At the end of the season he was released by the Eels to sign for the Sydney Roosters.[2]

Mortimer has not always started for the Roosters and has played some games in the current season for their feeder club the Newtown Jets. He was the captain of the Newtown 2012 New South Wales Cup winning Grand Final team.

In 2013, Mortimer played every game for the Roosters and eventually featured in their premiership winning team at the end of the season.[6]
