Daniel Dickey is a writer, photographer,[1] published humorist, and educator. He has been featured on MTV's True Life and writes a blog for the New Times Broward-Palm Beach weekly paper.[2] Several of his political/humor articles have been published in Top 50 newspapers, most notably opinion pieces in the Sun Sentinel and Hartford Courant.[3][4] His published editorial championing the importance of education was used to lobby the Florida Senate against statewide budget cuts and his letter to the editor of the Gainesville Sun stressed our country's need for equal rights.[5][6] Still active in the arts, a one-act play penned by Dickey, Don't Forget to Floss, was produced and recently premiered in New York's West Village.[7]
With support of several community leaders, he announced his candidacy for Weston, Florida City Commissioner[8] in the November 2012 elections. Though losing the election, local media highlighted that Dickey, only 26-years-old at the time, gained 42% of the vote while spending under $425.00. His opponent, an incumbent, and son-in-law to a prominent Florida politician,[9] spent over $24,000.[10]
Committing to focus on education reform, Dickey joined Teach For America as a creative writing and debate teacher in a high-need, low-income high school. Involved heavily in student outreach and support, Dickey was recently recognized by DonorsChoose.org for raising over $50,000 for 75 teachers in Miami-Dade.[11]
