He is credited with popularizing bhangra beats and setting up a parallel non-film music industry to the pre-Daler era existent Bollywood music. The Indian pop icon known for his energetic dance songs, his distinctive power pitched voice (an aureate voice), bejewelled turban and long flowing robes has been cited as an influence by many musicians and the father of the Indian pop industry.
Music career
Mehndi was a student of traditional Punjabi music, and his first album broke sales records in India.[2] Since 1995 he has recorded several albums in India and been a playback singer for Hindi movies. His international popularity has grown in recent years, allowing him to tour the United States.[3] Mehndi is well known as a philanthropist, funding beautification projects in Delhi and aiding earthquake victims.
Politics

Personal
In 2003, Mehndi was charged in a human trafficking case and accused of smuggling people out of India by disguising them as his troupe members in exchange for money when his brother was arrested with two passports.[5] Mehndi lost endorsements and was forced to sell his property. He said that members of the media, politicians and his rivals conspired to create false allegations against him. He said, "The only saving grace was that I never went to jail even for a single day. There were people who used to tell me that they would provide me with a separate cell in the jail with modern amenities. I am sure I will be vindicated soon."[6] As of October 2011, the case was open in Indian courts.[7]
Mehndi has established the Daler Mehndi Green Drive to help make a cleaner environment in Delhi. He has donated 8.5 crore rupees to the green drive, 1.2 crore rupees to KARGIL charities, and built 16 houses in Gujarat after an earthquake there.[8] He did a concert series in Pakistan to raise funds for the quake victims.[9]
