Steve Bishop, known professionally as Oneman, is a DJ and producer from Streatham, London. His background is in pirate radio and he is now a regular DJ on Rinse FM.[1]

Oneman's DJ sets typically blend dubstep, hip-hop, grime, UK funky and UK garage, and he has released two mix albums with Fabriclive and Rinse FM.

Crack Magazine featured an interview with DJ Oneman on March 7, 2013, Crack discusses Oneman's early career and background, describing him as a "A figure synonymous with the Rinse FM station and the brand and subculture surrounding it, the origins of illegal broadcasts and guerrilla tactics made for an aggressive movement and an unmistakable sound. Having grown up in Streatham during the original impact of UK garage, the part Oneman plays in the landscape now is twofold. It’s not as if he’s attempting to initiate a full-on renaissance of the UK garage scene, but it’s DJs like Oneman who help embed these sounds into the consciousness of a clubbing generation who narrowly missed it."

History

In 2008, Oneman was the first DJ to appear on the Mary Anne Hobbs BBC Radio 1 show without releasing a single record.[2]

DJ Oneman compiled and mixed Rinse:11 which was released in CD format by London based pirate radio station, Rinse FM, in 2010.[1]

FACT Magazine released "FACT MIX 239" in April 2011 which was a collaborative mix with Jamie xx.[3]

LuckyMe released "Ninety Three Mixtape" by Oneman in 2011.[4]

Oneman mixed FabricLive.64 DJ mix album in 2012 which received critical response from Pitchfork Media[5] and Resident Advisor.[6]

FACT TV featured an interview with DJ Oneman and Toddla T in which the artists discuss Notting Hill Carnival 2012.[7]

DJ Oneman released Solitaire Vol. 1 on January 28, 2013, which was available to download for free via his website.

DJ Oneman remixed Mount Kimbie's album track "You Took Your Time" featuring King Krule, and an additional verse from Jeremiah Jae.

DJ Oneman released Solitaire Vol. 2" on October 14, 2013, with a launch party at Fabric, alongside J Rocc, Lil Silva, Sasha Go Hard, Martelo and BRTSH KNIGHTS on the 18th October.

Rinse 11 (2010)

Rinse 11 is the eleventh CD from the London pirate station Rinse FM, compiled and mixed by Oneman and released 1 March 2010. Oneman describes the CD “It sounds like funky it’s just a bit different. I think it’s the beats and the atmosphere that are different because you wouldn’t see a girl with a smile on her face dancing to it, like she’d dance to a Crazi Cousins track. It’s the darker end of the scale, the dub end really.”[8] Fact Mag gave compliment "We’ve only listened to just over half of it, but trust us, ‘Flying Saucer’ into ‘Citizens of the City’ is a bit of a moment. Ms Dynamite, Zomby, Kode 9 and more feature."[1]

Critical Response

FACT Magazine featured a full review of the Rinse:11 album on 15th March 2010, Journalist Tom Lea stated, "Oneman, in his own, understated way, changed the face of British dance music".

FabricLive.64 (2012)

The FabricLive.64 mix released in 2012 contains partly a "throwback" to 2010's 'Rinse 11 mix' plus a more contemporary approach to the present times. Receiving wide acclaim for withstanding uniqueness, Fabriclive remains one of his most accomplished mixes. Oneman states "I wanted the mix to primarily be a representation of what I would typically play at fabric in current terms, so bearing that in mind I decided to draw on a lot of new house crossover stuff. The beginning of the mix is kind of a throwback to 2010, where I felt this UK Funky sound really started developing into another darker strand of UK dance music. The rest is really a mix of 128-134bpm music through the years; there’s some old Locked On garage classics in there too… I never really think out these things too much, it just has to make sense when I listen back to it."[9]

Critical Response

Pitchfork Media rated the album a 8.0 and stated that, "Applauding FabricLive.64 for its potential didacticism, though, would be unjustly ignoring just how much fun it is to listen to, how easily and pleasantly it moves, how Steve Bishop is playing to the rafters and pulling out all the stops when his name alone represents a seal of approval for many.[10]

The FabricLive.64 album was reviewed by Resident Advisor's Andrew Ryce in August 2012, "Those moments of creative synthesis are Fabriclive 64's saving grace—Oneman might not be a flashy jock, but he's a unique one. He has a way of pulling off the unconventional every single time, whether it's long, extended blends that sound like they shouldn't work or a hard pan from 2010 to 1998".[11]

Fabric went on to applaud Oneman by stating, “There are DJs that are heavily tied to styles, people who go on to become figures synonymous with a certain sound or a particular approach to mixing; and then there are DJ’s DJs – a different breed of people who manage to make the whole process of blending records from disparate genres look (and sound) seamless. Often, it’s not just about beat matching perfectly, it’s as much about capturing a mood and evolving it through your record selections as it is locking on to a consistent rhythm and that’s something that Streatham bred DJ, Steve Bishop, has proven himself to be mightily adept at over the years”.[12]

Solitaire Vol. 1 (2013)

The 'unaffiliated' Solitaire Vol. 1 is a 'Free' mix tape following on from his previous two releases. Mirroring the sets released on his Rinse FM shows, Factmag remarked Solitaire as "a statement of intent for what’s to come … Expect a melting pot of stripped back UK club jams and US rap in typical Oneman fashion with a couple of classics thrown in for good measure, plus exclusive guest features and collaborations, some of which will drop ahead of release”.[13] Oneman himself calls it “a gamble really, mostly off the cuff mixes… a game of subsonic solitaire, where risks sometimes pay off.”[13]

Radio

Around 2006, Oneman began to make his name in the dubstep scene for his virtuosic vinyl-only mixes, which combined older garage tracks he’d grown up with, with brand new dubstep tracks. “Digital Mystikz, D1,” he remembers, “anything from dubstep at the time that was rhythmically driven.”

At a time when halfstep rhythms were becoming established as the norm within dubstep, Oneman’s approach loosened up his sets, making them fluid and extremely danceable. He was, he says, interested in “trying to [mix] two tracks together to make a whole new track. Because I didn’t produce tunes, my whole thing would be if I had two tracks I picked that mixed together really well, I’d use that as a statement mix – you could almost say that was my mix.”

In 2007 he was asked to join Rinse FM, and in the time period since has been a key figure, as house and garage influences have increasingly crept their way back onto the capital’s dancefloors. His Rinse show now takes as wide an approach as ever, with everything from dubstep, garage and grime to current US hip-hop finding their way into his sets.

His love of dance music developed far earlier, however, as a teenager in South London listening to local pirate stations and early grime shows taped off Rinse FM. “Pirate radio back then was about communities, there was a real community spirit with the radio,” he says. “You’d have station loyalty, people phoning in.” And although that sense of locality has evaporated with the advent of the internet, “when people listen to Rinse they really get that snapshot of London, and what the London scene is all about at the moment. Because there’s no better representation than Rinse.”

Oneman continues his weekly broadcast on Rinse FM every Tuesday: 21:00 – 23:00 GMT.

Live

Oneman was one of many accomplished DJ's performing the first 'Live Streamed' event at Bestival 2012.[14] Oneman and Jackmaster were acknowledged as 'Artists of the day' on the Bestival Facebook page.[15]

Oneman played Kraków's 2012 Unsound Festival.

He supported SBTRKT at Shepherds Bush Empire in London, receiving great reviews from fans of both artists. Ticketmaster users gave the concert a near 5 star rating.[16] In a review by 'Give Pop a Chance!' he was an asset to the line up "Luckily Oneman has some big bassy tunes up his sleeve that keep an impatient crowd dancing as the stage is prepared for SBTRKT." [17]

Over February and early March 2013, Oneman toured the UK and Europe to celebrate his new release 'Solitaire'. In a review of his February 28 show at 'The Shipping Forecast' in Liverpool his set put his listeners in awe of his mixing talents "Mashing together dirty bass licks with anthems such as ‘Flowers in the Pouring Rain’ and Beyoncé’s ‘Naughty Girl’; the party had truly arrived, and Oneman’s superior mixing skills were laid out for all to see. Many were clambering over the mixing desk, staring in awe at his pure talent whilst he led us through an incredible two hour set that rarely gave a respite."[18]

Oneman completed his first US tour with a string of North America dates throughout March 2013. The tour included sets at SXSW along with the likes of Jackmaster, Wildarms and Bremnar to name a few on the Fader Fort stage. The set was streamed live.[19]

He has been touring and playing festivals in Europe in the spring and summer 2013. Highlights have included sets at O2 Oxford, The Pleasure Principle, Field Day, Bugged Out Weekender, and Sonar Festival where he was dubbed one of FACT magazines' must-see acts.[20]
