DINKY

DINKY is an acronym that stands for "Dual Income, No Kids Yet". It describes a high-earning couple who do not have children yet and are therefore able to afford a more expensive consumer lifestyle. It is used in the United States, UK, Canada, India, and China,

The term was coined in the 1980s at the height of "yuppie" culture. The Great Recession has solidified this social trend as more couples wait longer to have kids, with one in five choosing not to have them at all.[1]

Variations

DINK also exists and is used for "Dual Income, No Kids" in the United States, South Korea, and Japan. DINK is used in reference to childless and childfree couples.[2]

DINKER means "Dual (or Double) Income & No Kids Early Retirement". Some marketers have proposed "yappie" as a term to describe similar couples who do have children.[3]

A close antonym, mainly intended as a joke, is SITCOM, which stands for "Single Income, Two Children, Oppressive Mortgage.[4]
