D-Motor LF26
The D-Motor LF26 is a lightweight liquid cooled, four-stroke, flat four, 2.5 litre petrol aircraft engine, produced by D-Motor in Deerlijk, Belgium.[1]
Design and development
This direct-drive aero-engine is unusual in two respects: it is very oversquare with a bore:stroke ratio of 1.4:1, and it has a side-valve valvetrain. The designer determined that since maximum power was to be produced at only 2800 rpm, the extra weight and complexity of overhead valves would be superfluous. The resulting engine is compact and light at a dry weight of 47 kg (104 lb),[2] with a power-to-weight ratio of 1.28 kW/kg. The engine uses fuel injection, so carburetor heat is unnecessary. Lubrication is dry sump, with an external oil tank. Dual ignition is used, each cylinder having twin spark plugs sited between the valves and the piston crown.
The D-motor company, along with Rotax, has been selected as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) by B.O.T. Aircraft for the Speed Cruiser 07 light aircraft.[1]
With the aid of funding from the Belgian government,[3] D-Motor are developing a derivative 4 litre flat-six engine, and this motor is expected to produce 125 hp (93 kW) and to have dry weight of 72 kg (159 lb). The company encountered problems with the casting of the flat-six cylinder block and the resultant delay meant that the engine was not available in 2012. There were also problems with the flywheel/alternator, but these were solved using a lighter flywheel with neodymium magnets.[1]
