Cynfyn ap Gwerstan

Cynfyn ap Gwerystan (Cynfyn son of Gwerstan or Gwerystan; born c. 990[1]) was an obscure Welsh nobleman principally known on account of his son Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, who established the House of Mathrafal over Powys thanks to a Saxon invasion in 1063.

It was said that his father was Gwerstan ap Gwaithfoed and his mother Nest ferch Cadell.[2] It is possible that his father was a Saxon, as the name "Gwerystan" appears to be a Welsh transcription of the Anglo-Saxon name Werestan. Cynfyn married Angharad, daughter of King Maredudd ab Owain of Dyfed.[3]
