Cryoshell (sometimes stylized as C R Y O S H E L L) is a Danish rock band from Copenhagen first formed in 2006. The line-up currently consists of lead vocalist Christine "Lore" Lorentzen, lead guitarist Kasper Søderlund, keyboardist and bassist Mikkel Maltha and drummer Martin Pagaard. In the band's early years they recorded several songs used as soundtracks to Bionicle, a popular series of construction toys manufactured by Lego.
Cryoshell's genre of music has usually been classified as alternative rock, hard rock, metal, or even a crossover between the three. They have a style similar to that of bands such as Delain and Evanescence (both of which are also fronted by a female singer).
History
2006-2009: Formation and promotion through The Lego Group
Cryoshell was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2008, but the band has routes going back as far as 2006 of how it came to be. Originally, music composer Mikkel Maltha was contacted by The Lego Group to write and produce a song for their early 2007 wave of Lego Bionicle construction toys. Upon production, Maltha, accompanied fellow music composer and guitarist Kasper Søderlund and producer Eddie Simonsen, held auditions for who should provide vocals for the track, and after sending five potential singers to The Lego Group's headquarters in the United States to audition, the company chose Advance (an creative agency linked with The Lego Group) employee Christine "Lore" Lorentzen, whose vocals were used on the track titled "Creeping in My Soul". Upon release to help promote Bionicle's Barraki wave, the track became a instant hit from the official Lego website, rapidly becoming the number-one downloaded file, and eventually reaching over one million views on YouTube.
Due to the popularity of the track, Maltha and Søderlund were contacted again by Lego to produce two new songs to help promote Bionicle's Mahri and Phantoka waves in mid-2007 and early 2008 respectively. The songs "Face Me" and "Gravity Hurts" feature Danish singer Niels Brinck, who also co-wrote the two tracks.
By mid-2008, Maltha and Søderlund were rejoined by Lorentzen and recorded and released the track "Closer to the Truth" as their first song as the band Cryoshell. Like with their previous releases, the song was used to help promote another Lego Bionicle toy wave - the Mistika of late 2008. Cryoshell later announced plans to record a debut album featuring their previously released songs with a targeted release date of fall 2008, but due to numerous delays it was pushed back time after time. In July 2009 the band released their official debut single "Bye Bye Babylon" which also served as their fifth and final promotional song for Bionicle, this time as the soundtrack to the animated film Bionicle: The Legend Reborn as well as their Glatorian and Glatorian Legends toy waves of that year.
2010-present: Cryoshell
After the announcement of a debut studio album, Cryoshell began writing and recording in late 2008 with producer Jacob Hansen of Hansen Studios. They released a re-recording of "Creeping in My Soul" as their second single in December 2009 before finally releasing their self-titled debut studio album on June 7, 2010 in Scandinavia under Norwegian label Voices Music & Entertainment. It took the band a period two years after to secure a worldwide release, and by February 2012 the album was available in most global territories.
It was announced in November 2011 that Lorentzen would be taking maternity leave from the band and that runner-up of the 2010 Danish talent show The X Factor Tine Midtgaard would feature in two newly recorded songs; "Breakout" - released December 9, 2012 as a single - and a re-recording of "Gravity Hurts", which premiered on Cryoshell's official YouTube channel on January 4, 2013.[1] The two tracks were later confirmed to be featured on a re-release of the band's debut album set for early 2014 worldwide, after Cryoshell - now re-joined by Lorentzen[2] - secured a deal with Greek metal label The Leaders, which they will release all future material through.
