The County Championship Shield was formed in 2008 and originally played for by second tier teams in the RFU County Championship. The top eight counties are split into two regions of four teams, north and south, and play for the Bill Beaumont Cup. The same format was used for the Shield. From 2010 the County Championship Shield involves counties that are only able to select players from clubs at level five and below. The eleven teams involved are divided geographically into four pools (of three or four teams) and play each other once either home or away, with the top teams in each pool progressing to the semi–finals.[1][2]
