Cosmo's pizzas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cosmo’s Pizzas is a family run pizza and Italian food manufacturer based in Newtongrange, Edinburgh.

Cosmo Tamburro Senior, the Chairman and Founder of the company, had a humble post war upbringing in Formia, a small town on the west coast of Italy situated between Rome and Naples, becoming a chef at one of his hometown’s renowned hotels for wealthy holidaying Italians.

In 1958, he moved to Edinburgh, where, in 1965, he established his own small restaurant close to the Edinburgh Playhouse theatre.

By the mid 1970s Cosmo had moved to much larger premises in North Castle Street, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. In the 1970s and 1980s celebrities staying at Edinburgh’s more stately hotels were guided to the Cosmo Ristorante. Famous clientele included; Burt Lancaster, Margaret Lockwood, Ronnie Corbett, Sean Connery, Fanny Craddock, and James Last and His Orchestra.

It was in the basement of the restaurant that manufacturing began, supplying egg pasta to retailers and food service markets.

It was also at this time that his son, Cosmo Junior, and son in law Richard Smith, joined the business. In 1986 they branched out to rented property where they continued to produce products for retailers and caterers in the central belt of Scotland.

The family is featured on the National Museums of Scotland on how everyday life in Scotland changed throughout the 20th century.[1]

In 1993 Cosmo sold the restaurant and built a new factory in order to expand the manufacturing business. By 2002 Cosmo's Pizzas were supplying Italy[2]

In 2003 Cosmo Products Ltd moved to its present location in the old mining town of Newtongrange, just outside Edinburgh. Built from scratch, the 1,200m² building also has a one-acre plot set aside for further expansion.

Now firmly established [3] in Scottish supermarkets including Asda, Margiotta, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Scotmid, Tesco and Waitrose, the Cosmo brand also exports around half a million pizzas per annum to Italy [4] and Germany.

Products

The Cosmo's Pizza range includes: Bacon & Mushroom, Margherita, Italian Pepperoni, Scottish Triple Cheese and Haggis Pizzas. The company has also recently introduced Spicy BBQ Chicken as part of its growing selection.

Cosmo's have also teamed up with other Scottish food producers including Simon Howie, MacSween of Edinburgh and McLelland Cheddar to further develop the product range.

Cosmo's Pizzas also has a substantial presence in the foodservice sector in the UK, supplying both chilled and frozen pizzas to schools, universities, stadia and a wide variety of pub chains. As well as classic mozarella with Napoli sauce, the company's knowledge and experience allows customers to generate their own toppings for bespoke menus for individual events or calendar specific occasions.[5]

It was recently 'A' grade accredited by the [6] British Retail Consortium.
