John Dougan of Allmusic gave the album three out of five stars, calling it "pretty intimidating stuff" and that it was "definitely not for the faint of heart"[1] Historian Piero Scaruffi awarded Conviction seven and a half out of ten, saying that Ut "offered a convincing update of the "no-wave" aesthetics" and naming it the seventh-best rock album released in 1986.[3]
