Computer Magic is the electronic music solo-project of American producer Danielle "Danz" Johnson from Brooklyn, NY.[2] Danz is also known as a New York DJ, blogger, and graphic designer.[2] Danz is the sole composer for Computer Magic. Computer Magic's influences include Radiohead, Barbarella, and Philip K. Dick.[1][3]
Early life
Johnson was born and raised in the Catskills in both Woodridge, New York and Rock Hill, New York. She moved to Chinatown in New York, NY to attend Hunter College. Her father Richard Johnson was the caretaker of now defunct ski resort The Big Vanilla at Davos.[2]
Career
Johnson started her own music blog Mewzick at the age of 15 and continued blogging throughout high school and college on zDanz. She says that "Once I moved down to the city I started posting less and less. Once I started Computer Magic I stopped posting other people’s music and then began posting my own and just weird videos I like." [2][4] She became a DJ in New York City at the age of 18 at places such as the Tribeca Grand Hotel and The Annex.[5]
She began producing music whilst on hiatus from New York in Tampa, FL at her Mom's house.[3] There, she taught herself how to make music on her laptop using Ableton specifically.[2][6]
EPs
In 2010 and early 2011, Computer Magic released three self-produced free EPs: Hiding From Our Time, Hiding From More of Our Time and Spectronic via Computer Magic's official website. The song "Victory Gin" made Pitchfork's Forkast[7] and she became Stereogum's "Band to Watch".[1] She released an EP with White Iris records in 2011,[8] and an EP with French label Kitsuné entitled Kitsuné:Orion in 2012.[9]
Japan
In 2012 and 2013, Computer Magic released two consecutive full length records in Japan with Japanese label Tugboat Records and P-Vine Records.[10] The first record, a compilation of previously released songs entitled Scientific Experience, debuted at #5 on the Japanese Electronic Music chart on iTunes.[11]
In late 2013, Johnson became the face of Sofia Coppola's Japanese clothing company Milkfed.[12]
