Colby-Bates-Bowdoin
The Colby-Bates-Bowdoin rivalry (CBB) is a college athletic rivalry in the U.S. state of Maine comprising three NCAA Division III and New England Small College Athletic Conference schools: Colby College, Bates College, and Bowdoin College. These colleges have competed against each other athletically since the 1870s. Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin share one of the ten oldest NCAA Division III football rivalries. All three schools are considered to be among the "Little Ivies."
The three schools also have a long history of interaction off the field. Until 2005, CBB ran a group of overseas colleges in major cities of the world including London, Cork, Johannesburg, and others.[citation needed] Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin also share academic resources, such as library texts, faculty resources and job recruiting facilities.[citation needed] In 1961, the three colleges provided the financial support that led to the television station, WCBB, and subsequently, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.[citation needed]
CBB Championship
The CBB Championship is a college football competition between Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin. Each team plays the others once, with the CBB Championship awarded to the college that beats the other two. The CBB Championship was created for the 1965 college football season. Previously, the CBB schools had competed since 1893 against the University of Maine in the Maine State Series or Maine State Championship. When the University of Maine moved to a higher division in 1965, the rivalry took its current name. In 2009 Sporting News named the CBB Championship the best rivalry in Maine as part of its "50 States, 50 Rivalries" survey.[citation needed]
Bowdoin has won the most CBB Championships with 19 (1968–1971, 1973, 1975–1977, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1997, 1998, 2006–2008, 2010). Colby has won 14 (1972, 1983, 1988–1992, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2003–2005). Bates has won 9 (1966, 1967, 1974, 1978, 1981, 1986, 1999, 2002, 2012). There have been 5 three-way ties (1965, 1979, 1995, 2009, 2011), and there has been one two-way tie (Bowdoin and Colby in 1993). The most consecutive CBB Championships is 5 by Colby (1988–1992).
