Coláiste Mhuire Marino (Irish pronunciation: [ˈkɔl̪ˠaːʃtʲə ˈwɪɾʲə]), which is part of the Marino Institute of Education (Institiúid Oideachais Marino), is a primary teacher training college which is affiliated with Trinity College, Dublin. It is located on Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9. Coláiste Mhuire is primarily focused on providing for pre-service primary education. Courses are provided in association with the Church of Ireland College of Education, Froebel College of Education and Trinity College, Dublin. Degrees and diplomas are awarded by Trinity College, Dublin. Coláiste Mhuire Marino is run by the Congregation of Christian Brothers.
History
In 1831 the residence of the Superior General of the Irish Christian Brothers and the center of teacher training was moved to North Richmond Street (O’Connell Schools) Dublin from Our Lady’s Mount (North Monastery) in Cork. In 1874 it was transferred to Belvedere House in Drumcondra now the President’s House in St Patrick's College of Education. Cardinal Edward MacCabe who established it as a teacher training college, now known as St. Patrick’s College, acquired Belvedere House for the Christian Brothers initially. In 1875, The Brothers moved to Marino House, on the original Lord Charlemount demesne, Thomas Adderley step Father to Lord Charlemont was the last resident of the House prior to the move by the brothers, and they have made it their home since.
The college trained brothers who taught throughout the world, on all five continents. In 1926 the congregation became involved in the Irish National School system, and consequentially the college's focus on primary education increased.
In 1929 the Dept. of Education recognised the College as a teacher training college and students were awarded a National Teachers’ Diploma on completion of their course.
Since 1971 Brothers of other orders attended the college, and since 1972 the admission of lay students to Coláiste Mhuire became a permanent arrangement. From this time the B.Ed qualification gained from Coláiste Mhuire is validated from Trinity College Dublin.
In 2005 Mr. Colm Ó Ceallacháin was appointed Interim President of Coláiste Mhuire Marino following the resignation of Ms. Caoimhe Máirtín. In 2006 Dr. Anne O'Gara was appointed President of Marino Institute of Education.[1]
2012 saw Trinity College Dublin join the Christian Brothers in Co-Trusteeship of Marino.[2]
Courses
As of the 2012 cohort of Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.) students, the course is now four years in duration and is an honours degree programme.[3] This is a change sanctioned in all teacher training colleges from September 2012 following recommendations from the Teaching Council. The previous undergraduate course of three years duration awarded an Ordinary Bachelor of Education Degree (Level 7). Students could then take the part-time fourth year for the Level 8 award. In order to obtain a Higher Bachelor of Education Degree (Level 8) a part-time fourth year course must be taken. There is also a Post-Graduate course in Primary Teaching available at Coláiste Mhuire, Marino. This course is of 18 months duration known as the H.Dip in Education (Primary). At the end of the 18 month course, successful students are awarded with a Higher Diploma in Primary Teaching and are recognised as fully qualified primary school teachers.[4] This may be extended to a full two year course in the future, according to the Teaching Council.[5] From 2011-2012, there is a new BSc programme in Education Studies, aimed at those seeking to work in an education-related occupation in business, commerce, government or in youth services generally.

Other Activities
The Irish language is encouraged and fostered as the medium of communication in the college and also as a focus for teaching and learning.
The Institute has extensive conferencing facilities, which is used to host functions and events for a variety of educational, academic, religious, and corporate organisations. For the 2012 Olympics, Badminton Ireland used Marino for preparation for the games.[6]
Marino also hosts seminars and summer schools such as International Summer School in Irish Studies in association with TCD and Iona College (New York).
Marino students participate in a wide variety of sports, with individuals and teams playing Gaelic Football, hurling, camogie, basketball, badminton, and athletics, facilities such as the college gym and playing fields are available to students. There is also a number of non-sporting student societies, traditional music, debating, drama and film clubs.
Marino also provides a Study Abroad Programme with Iona College New York.[7]
