William Clarence Matthews was the first head football coach for the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers located in Tuskegee, Alabama and he held that position for two seasons, from 1893 until 1895 (there was no team in 1894). His coaching record at Tuskegee was 0 wins, 2 losses, and 0 ties. Matthews also played on at least one of the teams he coached, serving as the captain.[1] As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him 16th at Tuskegee in total wins and 16th at Tuskegee in winning percentage (.000).[2] A native of Selma, Alabama,[3] Matthews later attended Phillips Andover Academy[4] and Harvard University where he studied law and later became a lawyer. He died unexpectedly in 1928.[5]
