Clare Ellen O'Neil is an Australian politician. She is the Labor member for Hotham in the Australian House of Representatives.
Early life and education
She attended Loreto Mandeville Hall, and studied for a Bachelor of Arts (Australian history) and then a Bachelor of Laws degree at Monash University.
Career
She became a member of the Australian Labor Party at age 17, and in March 2003 - while still studying at university - O'Neil ran for and was elected as a city councillor in the City of Greater Dandenong at the age of 22. After one year in this position, she was elected the Mayor of Greater Dandenong, becoming the youngest female mayor of a local government area in Australia's history.[1] O'Neil was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2006 to study for a Master of Public Policy degree at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government,[2] and she has also contributed articles to The Age newspaper.[3]
O'Neil was endorsed as a late replacement candidate for the Australian Labor Party in the Division of Hotham prior to the Australian federal election, 2013,[4] and was subsequently elected.[5]
