Clanton is a city in Chilton County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover–Cullman Combined Statistical Area. At the 2010 census the population was 8,619.[2] The city is the county seat of Chilton County.
History
The town was founded by Alfred Baker in 1868, when Chilton County was formed. Clanton was named in honor of General James H. Clanton, a brigadier in the Confederate States Army, and was incorporated on April 23, 1873. Baker was also elected first mayor of the town.[1]
Early Civil Rights activist Ida B. Wells reproduced a photographic postcard depicting an 1891 lynching in Clanton to educate the white public of the atrocities committed against blacks.[3]
During World War II, a small German Prisoner of War camp was located in Clanton.[4]
Geography
Clanton is located at 32°50'23.316" North, 86°37'41.477" West (32.839810, -86.628188)[5].
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.4 square miles (53 km2) of which 20.3 square miles (53 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.15%) is water.[6]
Climate
The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Clanton has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. [7]

As of the census[9] of 2010, there were 7,800 people, 3,168 households, and 2,128 families residing in the city.[10] The population density was 383.8 inhabitants per square mile (148.2 /km2). There were 3,510 housing units at an average density of 172.7 per square mile (66.7 /km2).[6] The racial makeup of the city was 46.31% White, 46.01% Black or African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.[10]
There were 3,168 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% were married couples living together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.[10]
In the city the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.6 males.[10]
The median income for a household in the city was $30,394, and the median income for a family was $37,568. Males had a median income of $32,484 versus $20,344 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,299. About 15.1% of families and 19.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.5% of those under age 18 and 14.0% of those age 65 or over.[10]
Government
Clanton is governed via the mayor-council system. The mayor is elected in a citywide vote. The city council consists of five members elected from one of five wards.
Police
The Clanton Police Department is a professional 21st Century law enforcement agency located in the heart of Chilton County that is preparing to grow with the community.
The Clanton Police Department is authorized 30 sworn law enforcement personnel. Every member of the Clanton Police Department is outfitted from head to toe with the most modern law enforcement technology. The police department issues the Glock 22 and Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun as the primary service weapon and Glock 27 as the backup service weapon.
Each officer is issued a Colt or Rock River AR-15 and a Mossberg 12 Gauge shotgun. The City of Clanton provides officers with the newest PT Armor body armor every 5 years. The department provides each officer with all of his/her uniforms and duty gear. In addition, the City of Clanton provides a monthly clothing allowance to officers to maintain or replace old or outdated equipment.
Clanton Police Department officers are required to be APOSTC certified and maintain their certification by attending at least 12 CEU hours per year. At the present time the department is divided into three divisions: Patrol Division, Detectives Division, and the Probation Division.

Over 80% of Alabama's peach crop comes from Chilton County.[11]
