Citavi is a reference management program for Microsoft Windows published by Swiss Academic Software in Wädenswil, Switzerland. Citavi is widespread in Germany,[1] with site licenses at most German universities,[2] many of which offer training sessions and settings files for Citavi.[1]

Versions

Citavi is descended from a reference management program called LiteRat, developed at the Heinrich Heine University in 1995,[3] and considered version 1.0. The first version to bear the Citavi name was released as Citavi 2.[4] Version 3 was released in November 2010, the first version with a user interface in English[5] (prior versions were in German only). Version 4.0 allows to switch between English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Citavi is offered as Citavi Free (no cost, limited to 100 references per project), Citavi Pro (commercial, unlimited solo projects, team projects limited to 100 references), Citavi Team (commercial, no restrictions), and Citavi Reader (commercial, read access to all projects, limited to editing solo projects up to 100 references).

Features

Citavi's core features are reference management, knowledge organization, and task planning. An online search feature lets the user search databases and catalogs from within the program.[6] Up to 20 people can edit titles simultaneously in a Team project. The database file has to be saved on a windows network drive. The Citavi online help include a starter newsletter, videos, an online manual, and a forum.

Reference management

  • Import from other reference management programs and formats, including EndNote, ProCite, and BibTeX.[11]
  • Citavi Picker
    • for internet browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Google Chrome[1][6][12]
      • ISBNs on web pages can be imported in Citavi with a click.
      • Web pages are imported as a reference
      • Web pages can be transformed into a PDF document to save the content of the page.
    • for Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader
      • PDF documents can be imported with a click. If the document has a DOI, it is used to automatically add bibliographical information.
  • Works with various word processors
    • Word Add-In for Word versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 365.
    • In OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice Writer, placeholders are inserted into the text, with subsequent formatting in one of the included citation styles.
    • Works with any programm that can process files in RTF (ie. Scrivener) via the clipboard.
    • Integration with LaTeX editor LyX via Named Pipe (Configuration guide; PDF; 1.5 MB).
    • Other supported LaTeX editors: LeD, TeXnicCenter, TeXmaker, TeXworks, WinEdt, WinShell, WinTeX). Insert directly quotations and configurable cite commands (ie. \cite{Smith2013}) per keyboard shortcut.
  • Publishing in all common citation styles. At the moment, over 2000 citation styles are available. (October 23, 2013).[13] Further styles are added for free on request.
  • Integrated citation style editor with programmable components and templates. Advanced style finder (since Version 4.2.41 Beta).

Knowledge organization

  • Citavi can import text excerpts and images from documents as quotations and organize them together with own ideas imported as "thoughts".[14]
  • Quotations and thoughts can be outlined to reflect the structure in chapters of the final publication, thus permitting to separate the construction of the argumentative structure from the actual writing process.[15]

Task planner

  • Includes a task planner for scheduling of tasks and milestones.[16]

For LaTeX users Citavi offers the following functions

  • Several configurable BibTeX and BibLaTeX export filters. Citavi scans the document and the titles from Citavi to a BibTeX file that LaTeX/BibTeX can use to format the text.
  • Automatic creation of BibTeX keys for titles in Citavi, configurable.

Compatibility

  • Citavi can export data to be imported by many other reference management programs.
  • Citavi can import files from many other reference management programs, including but not limited to EndNote, ReferenceManager, and ProCite.
