The Mural was finished with painting about 1½ weeks before opening. The Grand Opening was at 9:30 am on Thursday 16 December 2010 outside Churton Park School as police provided a road block so students could watch from the road. The Grand Opening had some special guests including Peter Dunne (Ohariu MP), Katrina Shanks (National MP), More FM presenter, Churton Park Board of Trustees. There was also a special performance by the Kapa Haka group and a special visit from Santa. The audience consisted of teachers, parents, children, staff, special guests, etc.
