Chris Ramsey (born 3 August 1986) is an English stand-up comedian and actor from South Shields.
Life and career
Raised in South Shields in South Tyneside,[1] Ramsey studied film at the University of Sunderland. He decided to leave without completing the degree in order to focus upon his career in stand-up comedy which was becoming more established and time-consuming.[2][3]
Ramsey began his career in comedy in 2007 by compéring an open-mic night in Newcastle upon Tyne.[1] In 2008, he was a nominee for the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year.[4] He first took a solo show, Aggrophobic, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010. His 2011 show, Offermation, was nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award.[5] Offermation was recorded for BBC Radio 4, and broadcast in March 2012.[6] His 2012 Edinburgh show was Feeling Lucky, followed by a national tour.
In March 2012, he was cast in the lead role of Jack Pearson in Jason Cook's sitcom Hebburn. First broadcast in October 2012 on BBC Two, the show is set in Hebburn, near to Ramsey's hometown, South Shields.[7] It has been renewed for a second series.
Ramsey has also made several appearances on other TV shows, including Mock the Week, Morgan Spurlock's New Britannia, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Russell Howard's Good News, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Show and Tell, Argumental and Sweat the Small Stuff.
As of 2012, he is also a regular panellist on Celebrity Juice.
In February 2012 he had his biggest performance to date, at Frank Morton 2012, in the Metro Radio Arena. During the performance his magic caused 1000's of rubber ducks to take flight, effectively overshadowing his stand-up.
On 17 November 2012 Ramsey alluded to a Twitter discussion and repeatedly quoted "bumming your dad" during an episode of Soccer AM. He was then given the red card and "sent off", meaning he could not take part in the car park challenge. He was later consoled in his dressing room by Chris Kamara.[8]
He used to be a supporter of Newcastle United FC, but claims to no longer care enough about it.[9]
He is an avid fan of the restaurant Nandos.
