Playing career
Huddersfield Town
Youth team and turing pro
Halifax-born Atkinson originally joined Huddersfield Town's Academy as a seven-year-old, having played for local junior side Warley Rangers. A key member of the youth and reserve sides in the 2009–10 season, he made the step up to the first team in 2010–11 with a two-year professional contract and manager Lee Clark spoke of his admiration for the youngster during pre-season.[3]
He made his début for the Terriers as a substitute in the 6–0 win over Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup at the Galpharm Stadium on 27 November 2010. He made his league debut in the 1–1 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge at The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium on 22 February 2011.
2011–12 season Darlington loan & Huddersfield promotion
On 25 July, he signed a six-month loan deal with Darlington.[4] He made his debut for Darlington on 13 August 2011, in a 1–0 win over Braintree Town. He returned to the Galpharm on 4 January 2012 after making 15 appearances for the Conference National side he made his first appearances of the season for Huddersfield Town, as an 81st minute substitute for Anton Robinson during the clubs 1–0 win over Scunthorpe United on 21 April 2012 and would be his only appearance of the season as Huddersfield finished the season as Play-off champions winning promotion to the Championship after beating Sheffield United on penalties in the Wembley final.[5]
Chesterfield loan
On 12 September 2012, Atkinson joined his team-mate, Liam Ridehalgh on loan at Football League Two side Chesterfield. Three days later, he scored on his début in the 3–1 win over Wycombe Wanderers. He would score 4 more goals, as well as an own goal which gave Fleetwood Town a victory, in his 15 games.
Huddersfield recall
He was recalled by Town on 26 November as a precaution in case an appeal for Keith Southern's red card against Charlton Athletic failed. It did fail and Atkinson came off the bench in the second half of Town's 3–0 against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. He made his first league start for Town in the West Yorkshire derby against Leeds United at the John Smith's Stadium on 1 December and scored his first goal for the Terriers in the 12th minute, but Town eventually lost 4–2.
Tranmere Rovers loan
Atkinson completed a ‘window to window’ loan move to Football League One side Tranmere Rovers on July 18, 2013, until January 2, 2014.[6] He made 22 appearances, scoring 2 goals before returning to the Terriers.
Bradford City loan
On 24 January, Atkinson joined Bradford City on loan until the end of the season. [7] He made his debut on 1 February, replacing Aaron McLean in the second half of an away game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.[8]
