Chovva is a place near Kannur, in Kannur District of Kerala, India.[1] Chovva mainly consists of two areas - Thazhechovva and Melechovva. The National Highway 17 runs through both Thazhechovva and Melechovva. The name Chovva is believed to be derived from the Malayalam word "Chovvu" meaning propriety. Mele and Thazhe are Upper and Lower respectively, indicating that MeleChovva is relatively at higher altitude compared with Thazhe chovva (a few meters)

Chovva is one of the residential suburbs of Kannur (Cannanore). Other residential suburbs are Talap, Thana, Kakkad, Chalad, Kannur City, Mundayad, Thottada, Chelora etc.

Thazhechovva

Thazhe Chovva is a small town on National Highway 17 between Kannur and Thalassery. It is approx 4 km from Kannur towards south. The nearest Railway station is Cannanore South Station which is about a kilometer from the Thazhe chovva market. In the year 2001, a bypass highway was opened, by the name of Chala-Nadal bypass road, which links Thazhechovva with Nadal and Chala. The bypass is a relatively a straight road, which saves time by avoiding two railway gates on National Highway 17, namely the Chovva gate and the Nadal gate.

The only fish market available in Chovva situated in Thazhe Chovva. There is also a Co-operative spinning mill nearby which employees many people. Chovva Juma Masjid and Sree Muthappan Temple at Charapuram, about a kilometre from Thazze Chovva on the Thillanur Road, are the two main places of worship in Chovva. The Kottungal Kavvu on S.N college road is another place of worship which has yearly festivals with the traditional Theyyam and muthappan. Muthu Mariyamman Kovil & Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Kovil - two famous devi kshetram for navaratri festivities situated near railway gate on S.N.college road. S.N. College, Kannur is in Thottada, near Thazhechovva. There is a small stream that flows through the town Chovva Thodu. The town has a road that leads to Anjarakandi through Kappad on the left side of the NH 17 (while going to Thalassery from Kannur).

Melechovva

Melechovva is closer to Kannur Town. The huge water tank is a landmark. This is the main junction where the roads to Mattannur and Thalassery meet. Chovva High School is only a few yards from the junction. Chovva Shiva Temple is situated by the side of water tank.

Melechovva also has weaving mills like Rajalakshmi,West Coast etc.. which are very near to Dharma Samajam U.P.School. Also there is a small school near Padiriparamaba (literal meaning plot belonging to the Christian Priest)which caters to students till class 4 of the Kerala Syllabus.
