It has a small range of local services including a chip shop, dental practice, newsagents, chemist's, cafe, pub, and hairdresser's. In the 1960s Chestnut Lodge saw the rise of housing in the area with 2 large three-story council flats being constructed with around 20 flats. Also on Kershaw Street 9 three-bedroom houses were built, as well as 4 houses built in the 1970s and 4 two-bedroom houses built in 2002. Seven bus services pass through each way every hour including numbers 2, 12, 14, 82a, 79c. The pub is Widnes' second oldest pub after the Unicorn in Cronton. On the outskirts of the suburb is Prescot Pond which was revamped in 2001. There is a United Services Club which in April 2011 featured on Liverpool radio station City 96.7 for collecting over £1,000 for the Zoe Houes Children's hospital in Liverpool.

In 2000 Ditton Primary School opened leaving its former position in the community empty for eight years until in 2008 when the remains of the old school were demolished and a new Co-op store was built. The suburb has a population of around 5,000.

Chestnut Lodge has three schools Ditton Primary School (formerly Ditton County School), Chestnut Lodge Special School, and Ashley School. Chestnut Lodge special school is an open age school for the handicapped and is the only special school in Widnes. Ashley School is a school for children with learning difficultes and accepts pupils from age 11 to 16. Ditton Primary School is a primary school built in 2000.
