Cheremkhovo (Russian: Черемхово, IPA: [tɕɪrʲɪmˈxovə]) is a town in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Population: 52,647 (2010 Census);[5] 60,107 (2002 Census);[7] 73,636 (1989 Census).[8]

History

Cheremkhovo was founded in 1772.[citation needed]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Cheremkhovo serves as the administrative center of Cheremkhovsky District,[1] even though it is not a part of it.[citation needed] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the Town of Cheremkhovo[2]—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[citation needed] As a municipal division, the Town of Cheremkhovo is incorporated as Cheremkhovo Urban Okrug.[3]

Economy

The town is one of the coal-mining towns in the Irkutsk coal basin.
