Sir Charles Peter Layard (5 December 1849 - 8 June 1916) was the 18th Chief Justice of Ceylon. He was appointed on 26 April 1902 succeeding John Winfield Bonser and was Chief Justice until 18 June 1906. He was succeeded by Joseph Turner Hutchinson.[1][2]
Charles Layard was born in Colombo, in 1849, to Charles Peter Layard and Louisa who hailed from a distinguished family, whose earlier relatives migrated to Ceylon. His father was a Civil Servant and first Mayor of Colombo.[3]
Charles Layard filled the seat of Chief Justice upon the retirement of John Winfield Bonser. Layard was one of the first Chief Justices produced by the local bar.[4]
