Review
Changing Places is wonderfully soaked in a hushed, delicate romanticism that's hard to resist. Most of the record is pitched at a whisper, with the spaces between the notes easily as significant as the notes themselves. Drummer Jarle Vepsestad (also known from Supersilent) is felt rather than heard much of the time, while bassist Harald Johnsen provides gentle, intelligent support and lovely, guitar-like solos. When playing it you could think it was an album of standards - lost standards that I could almost remember. Gustavsen writes songs with an aura of completion, of melodic finality. Changing Places will make the personal short list of favorite late-night jazz recordings for everyone who hears it. Gustavsen possesses a reflective lyric sensibility that overlays seamlessly on midnight.[3]
Reception
The Allmusic review by Glenn Astarita awarded the album 2½ stars stating:
... The bulk of this production consists of the trio's probing inclinations and lightly implemented rhythmic structures. Gustavsen's multifaceted arsenal features an abundance of swirling arpeggios, nimbly rendered harmonics, and gently fabricated block chords. Alternatively, the total listening experience becomes a bit arduous in scope, due to the band's unwavering gait. Nonetheless, Gustavsen is most certainly one to watch! ...[1] |
