Cervantes is a fourth class municipality in the province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 16,573 people.[3]
The municipality is officially the Summer Capital of Ilocos Sur. It has a relatively cooler climate than most of lowland Ilocos Sur due to its geographical location and proximity to Mountain Province and Benguet.
History
On December 8, 1941, the Japanese planes and bombers attacked Cervantes, and was occupied by the Japanese Imperial Forces in 1942. On June 14, 1945, Filipino soldiers under the 15th, 66th & 121st Philippine Commonwealth Army Infantry Regiments of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines - Northern Luzon or USAFIP-NL defeated the Japanese forces at the Liberation of Cervantes and the Battle of Bessang Pass on 1945 and liberated the town.
