Catla catla (syn. Cyprinus catla; Gibelion catla), also known as Indian carp, is the only member of the genus Catla, of the carp family Cyprinidae. It is a fish with a large protruding lower jaw. It is commonly found in rivers and lakes in northern India, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Pakistan. In India it is commonly known as the Bhakur. In Assam it is known as Bhakua or Bahu or Dhekera. It reaches a maximum length of 1.83 m (6.0 ft) and a weight of about 110 kg (240 lb).[1] catla has large, greyish scale on dorsal side and whitish on belly. feeding behaviour of catla is surface breeder as well as column feeder also. adult is zooplankton feeder but young ones feeds on both zooplankton and phtoplankton.
Taxonomy
While some sources such as FishBase and Taxonomicon consider this species to belong to the genus Catla, ITIS considers it to belong to the genus Gibelion Heckel, 1843.
Aquaculture
It is an important aquacultured freshwater species in South Asia.[2]
