Casti-Wergenstein or Casti-Vargistagn is a municipality in the district of Hinterrhein in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.
History
Casti-Wergenstein was created in 1923 through the union of the formerly independent municipalities of Casti and Wergenstein.[3]
Casti is first mentioned in 1204 as ad Castellum.[4] Wergenstein is first mentioned in 1219 as Vergasteno.[5]
Geography
Casti-Wergenstein has an area, as of 2006, of 25.6 km2 (9.9 sq mi). Of this area, 52.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 7.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.6% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (39%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[6]
The municipality is located in the Schams sub-district, of the Hinterrhein district.
Demographics
Casti-Wergenstein has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 49.[1] As of 2008, 5.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 36.4%.
As of 2000, the gender distribution of the population was 55.0% male and 45.0% female.[7] The age distribution, as of 2000, in Casti-Wergenstein is; 8 people or 14.3% of the population are between 0 to 9 years old. 8 people or 14.3% are 10 to 14, and 5 people or 8.9% are 15 to 19. Of the adult population, 5 people or 8.9% of the population are between 20 to 29 years old. 7 people or 12.5% are 30 to 39, 10 people or 17.9% are 40 to 49, and 2 people or 3.6% are 50 to 59. The senior population distribution is 3 people or 5.4% of the population are between 60 to 69 years old, 3 people or 5.4% are 70 to 79, there are 3 people or 5.4% who are 80 to 89, and there are 2 people or 3.6% who are 90 to 99.[8]
In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SVP which received 46.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (29.6%), the CVP (12.6%) and the FDP (4.4%).[6]
The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Casti-Wergenstein about 82.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).[6]
Casti-Wergenstein has an unemployment rate of 0%. As of 2005, there were 12 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 5 businesses involved in this sector. No one is employed in the secondary sector and there are no businesses in this sector. 11 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 3 businesses in this sector.[6]

Languages
The municipality was once exclusively Romansh-speaking, using the Sursilvan dialect. However, since World War I, German has grown to the point that it is about evenly divided between Romansh-speaking and German-speaking population. Both are used as official languages in the municipality. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks Rhaeto-Romance (55.4%), with German being second most common (42.9%) and Italian being third ( 1.8%).[6]
