Carla Azar is an American musician and a member of the band Autolux.[1] Azar is a multi-instrumentalist but is known primarily for playing drums and singing in Autolux. She has collaborated with the artist/painter Mark Whalen, (also known as Kill Pixie[2]) on several art exhibitions from 2009-2011, creating music for installation rooms for the artist. Carla is also known for playing with Jack White, contributing drums on Jack White's 2012 album, Blunderbuss as well as touring with him.
Career
The band Autolux formed in 2001 in Los Angeles, California. Azar met Eugene Goreshter while scoring Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo's play Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Azar met Greg Edwards when Azar's previous band toured with Edwards' former band Failure.[3] In August 2000, Autolux made their debut, playing two shows at the Silverlake Lounge. On March 1, 2001, the band released a self-produced EP entitled Demonstration. It contained five songs recorded on an 8 track in their rehearsal space.[4]
After impressing legendary producer T-Bone Burnett during a performance, Autolux signed to DMZ, a small label created by Burnett and the Coen Brothers.[3][4]
In 2002, Azar and Josh Klinghoffer supported Vincent Gallo's as his tour band in support of his record When. Besides drums, Azar also played guitar and mellotron on the tour.[5]
Azar has also contributed drums to a number of other artists' records, including T-Bone Burnett's 2005 album The True False Identity[6] and John Frusciante's 2005 album Curtains.[7]
In January 2008, Azar entered the studio along with PJ Harvey, John Parish, Eric Drew Feldman and, Giovanni Ferrario to provide drums on the follow-up to Harvey and Parish's 1996 collaboration Dance Hall at Louse Point.[8]
In May, 2011, Carla began recording with Jack White on his first solo album, Blunderbuss. In 2012, Azar toured with Jack White's female touring band, The Peacocks.[9]
