"Can't Touch It" is a song performed by Australian singer-songwriter Ricki-Lee Coulter, taken from her second studio album Brand New Day. The song was chosen as the lead single from the studio album which was released on 4 August 2007 by Shock Records. The song later appeared on her first greatest hits compilation Ricki-Lee: The Singles. The song was written by Coulter, Brian Kierulf and Joshua M. Schwartz, while production was handled by Andrew De Sylva.
Known as a R&B-inspired song, the song is also inspired by dance-pop and funk music, it features instrumentation's off handclaps, trumpets, trombones and drums. The song received mixed to positive reviews, praising the progression of Coulter's vocals. The song is Coulter's most successful single to date, peaking at number two in her native Australia, where it managed to receive a platinum certification. The song managed to have success in the United Kingdom, where it was served a remix and charted in component charts in the UK.
Background
"Can't Touch It" was co-written by Coulter, Brian Kierulf and Joshua M. Schwartz in New York[1][2] and produced by Andrew De Sylva.[3] She explained, "the song is about me and my best friend going out for a night out in New York, not needing the guys, and just having a great night".[4]
Chart performance
"Can't Touch It" debuted on the ARIA Singles Chart at number two.[5] The song spent twenty-three weeks in the ARIA top 50 including eight weeks in the top-ten and was eventually certified platinum.[6] It ranked #33 on the ARIA End of Year top 50 Australian artists singles chart.[7]
A remix of the song was released as an extended play in May 2008 through record labels, Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound UK and re-titled "U Wanna Little of This". It peaked at number one on the UK Commercial Club Pop Charts and at number two on the UK Upfront Club Charts.[8] To date, it is recognized as her most successful single to date.
Music video and promotion
The music video features Coulter with her girlfriends at a nightclub. It features a cameo appearance by her good friend and former Australian Idol contestant Dan O'Connor, who acts as a bartender and love interest. It was filmed in Lotus Bar.
In 2008, Australian network channel nine used "Can't Touch It" to promote American drama series Cashmere Mafia, while the song was used in America to advertise the Lipstick Jungle.[9] In April 2010 "Can't Touch It" featured on the movie trailer and closing credits for the movie Sex and the City 2.[10] It also featured in the film's soundtrack released on 25 May 2010. The song most recently featured on episode 103 of the American cheerleading comedy-drama series, Hellcats.[11]
It was also used in the Top 4 episode of Season 10 of So You Think You Can Dance USA.
