The Campion School is a co-educational secondary school in Bugbrooke, about 6 miles (10 km) from Northampton, England. Founded in 1967, it became a Language College in September 1997, and in 2011 the school became an academy.[1] Languages taught include French, German, Japanese, Italian, Welsh and Spanish. The school takes about 230 pupils a year into its year 7, and teaches students aged 11 to 18. Between 55% and 60% of pupils stay on to the sixth form.
History
The original buildings were built 1966 to 1968 by the county architect's department and it was the first purpose-built comprehensive school in Northamptonshire. Extensions were added in 1971-2.[2]
League table performance
In 2007, 52% of pupils achieved 5 A*-C grades at GCSE against a national average of 46.7% and a county average of 42.3%. This placed it 14th out of 43 schools in Northamptonshire at GCSE level. In the same year, the school gained 884.2 out of 1323.5 possible QCA points. This placed it 5th out of 43 schools in Northamptonshire at AS/A2 level. The school had a 1.2% unauthorised absence rate (generally either truancy or holidays taken in term time which have not been agreed with the school) - lower than the national and local averages of 1.4% and 1.6% respectively. The school had an Ofsted inspection under the current headmaster in early 2008. The results were published on 4 March 2008.[3] The report concluded that Achievement in the main school is inadequate overall; students do not make sufficient progress. In the sixth form, it is outstanding. The Ofsted inspection in 2009 concluded that: the school no longer requires significant improvement. Campion is now a satisfactory and improving school with good features. The effectiveness of the sixth form is outstanding. A parent commented, "I have noticed a marked improvement in the school over the past 12 months."[4] The most recent Ofsted inspection was in September 2011 stating that: Students are extremely proud of this good school.[5]
Campion Radio
Campion School had a school radio which was hosted by students. It was purportedly a pre-chosen play list played on quietspeakers in the school's main hall, with the occasional interjection from students. More recently certain students have started playing music at lunchtimes over the hall's speaker system with the consent of the school teachers.
Campion Podcast
Campion also has a Podcast that was set up during Creativity Week in 2010 by Andy Wykes. This is a project that will continue to be worked on with a termly edition published and available via the school website and iTunes in the both Enhanced and Standard format. - see external link.
Citrix Network
In 2004 Campion School installed a brand new network system based on a Citrix MetaFrame network using Microsoft software. The school has a wireless network throughout used by staff with access to personal laptops, and by students with Apple iBooks in most departments. The school network can also be accessed by students from home, through Campion's website. The school is working to improve the system. It is currently managed by the Manchester-based company Dataspire.
MySpace Community
Campion School has a MySpace School Community, for alumni and current students. It leads an active discussion board and is moderated by a current student of the school. Campion students talk about the school, what can be done to improve it and what they do or don't like.
Catchment area
The following are among the school's current catchment area:
The previous catchment area also included Blisworth. Northamptonshire County Council provide free transport for students in catchment areas up to the statutory leaving age of 16. Those over the statutory leaving age or under that age but outside catchment area must either pay for the service or use their own transport. The only transport available through the school for those not in the catchment area is the Duston and Hunsbury bus, which students must pay for each term.
