Camp Arcadia is an all-girl sleepaway camp emphasizing basic wilderness skills, located on Pleasant Lake in Otisfield, Maine.
History
Camp Arcadia was founded in 1916 by George Meylan. As of 2011 the camp is owned by Meylan's descendants Anne Fritts and Louise Henderson and Louise Fritts Johnson.
Otisfield is about 45 minutes from Portland, Maine and is centered around Pleasant Lake, which is also home to Seeds of Peace Camp.
Camp Arcadia's large lakefront is the main location for all water activities.[1]
Program
Camp Arcadia accepts girls aged 7–17 for programs lasting between one and seven weeks. Campers are encouraged to plan and carry out their own individual program and attain proficiency with guidance. Instructional activities include boating, campcraft, swimming and canoeing, and other electives such as arts and crafts, horseback riding, archery, kayaking, sailing, tennis, nature, gymnastics, dance, dramatics, music, diving, synchronized swimming, knitting, weaving, photography, and writing in the camp's journal, Chipmunk Chatter.
Camp Arcadia also has a trips program in which campers are brought to either hike in the White Mountains or canoe in the series of lakes in Maine. Some of these include Mount Washington, Mount Lafayette, Mount Katahdin, Sebago Lake, and other wilderness adventures.
