"Calendar Girl" is a song written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. It was a hit single for Sedaka in 1961.

Background

In the lyrics, the singer recites the months and explains how events throughout the year give him reasons to celebrate the love he has for his girlfriend.^[2] The events primarily relate to Western and American holidays.

Howard Greenfield got the inspiration for the song title from an old movie listing in TV Guide. Recording of the song required 26 takes over a three-hour period.

A contemporary Scopitone promotional clip for the song was filmed in color. It consists of Neil Sedaka playing the piano and dancing alongside a number of models, on a mock stage made to resemble calendar themes.

This was one of several Sedaka recordings that employed the services of drummer Gary Chester.^[3]

Reception

"Calendar Girl" reached #4 on the US Billboard chart in 1961,^[4] making it one of the more commercially successful Sedaka songs alongside "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen" "Oh! Carol", and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do".

His version reached number one on Japan's "Utamatic" song chart in the fall of 1961.

Covers

Petula Clark recorded a French-language cover of this song.

In 1978, Purina Cat Chow did a commercial using a track called "Calendar Cat", which sounds like Neil Sedaka's "Calendar Girl".
