History
The first school was opened by Professor G. W. Newton in 1875. A two-story frame building was constructed in 1893. By 1900, five teachers were employed. Prompted by steady growth, the district constructed an impressive brick structure, known as Old Main, in 1915. It was demolished in 1972. The school system was racially integrated at the elementary level with the enrollment of five African-American students during the 1965–66 school year; the following school year, upper grades were desegregated. On August 10, 2006, Cabot Junior High School North experienced a devastating fire which was believed to have started as a small electrical fire in the library caused by a faulty light bulb. Although there were 100 people in the building at the time, there were no injuries. The building burned from 2:30 P.M. to about 9:00 P.M., and the structure was a total loss. Cabot Fire and Police Departments say that this is one of the worst structure fires to have ever occurred in Cabot. The school was only about 8 years old. It was rebuilt and reopened about three years later. As of 2010, the school has a minority student population of approximately seven percent, of which two percent is African American. Almost 10,000 students (as of 2010) are schooled in nine elementary schools, two middle schools, two junior high schools, one high school, and the Academic Center of Excellence.[12]
