CHKS-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts at 106.3 FM in Sarnia, Ontario. The station broadcasts a mainstream rock format with the brand name K106.3.

Range

CHKS-FM can be heard in parts of Eastern Michigan, as far west as Flint, Michigan. The station conflicts with WGER of Saginaw, Michigan in Genesee and Lapeer Counties, though those with directional antennas can tune either station in these areas.

Format

K-106.3 now experiences great interference for listeners tuning into CHKS FM from Macomb, parts of St. Clair and Kent Counties in Eastern Michigan & Southwestern Ontario.[citation needed] From a radio station K-love broadcasting from a translator transmitter located at Eight Mile and Meyer in Oak Park, Michigan. There has never been any official complaints against K-Love's interference with K 106.3, this has not been the first case of Detroit low power translator interfering with an out of market Full Power station. A low power translator called Smooth Jazz 104.7 caused interference with Southern Detroit listeners trying to tune into WIOT on the same frequency. So a battle brew for several months with the FCC and in the end WIOT was able to claim the frequency back in Southern Michigan. Smooth Jazz 104.7 was forced off the air by the FCC, for interfering with a Full power licensed FM station service contour.

History

The station was launched in 1968 by Dancy Broadcasting, as an AM station with the callsign CKJD. The station's original AM frequency was 1250 AM. It was acquired by Rogers Communications in 1972, and moved to 1110 AM in 1977. In 1981, Rogers also launched an FM sister station, CJFI.

CKJD and CJFI were sold to Maclean-Hunter subsidiary Blue Water Broadcasting in 1987. The following year, CKJD adopted a country music format with the new callsign CKTY.

When Rogers acquired Maclean-Hunter in 1994, the Blue Water stations were transferred to Blackburn Radio. Blackburn converted the station to FM in 1999, and gave the station its present call sign.

106.3 FM in Sarnia is currently known as K106.3 and plays "Great Classics & The Best New Rock".
