Bydales School is a secondary school in Marske-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, England; and is in the Redcar and Cleveland Local Education Authority. In 2008, the school had an enrollment of 734 pupils, and also was awarded Technology College status.

History

Bydales was previously Marske County Modern School, built in 1965.[2][3][4]

The school was rebuilt from older buildings, and a new PFI school was opened to pupils on 2 November 2006.[5] The new school buildings which received criticism over its aesthetics, being described as "a terrible mess" with "huge liquorice allsorts" on the roof were officially opened by local MP Vera Baird on 7 November 2007.[6][7] The same day the school's fair trade shop began trading.[8][9]

The school was accepted, with 114 other schools, onto the trust school programme in April 2008.[10]

In 2008, 61% of pupils achieved 5A*-C GCSEs, including English and Maths.[11]

The school won the 'DCSF Award for Sustainable Schools in the North-East and Cumbria' in the Teaching Awards 2009.[12]

The school's headteacher Alaisdair Kesson resigned in 2013, a year after joining the school.

Facilities

Bydales has a small wind turbine, solar panels and a hydrogen fuel cell.[13]

Uniform

The school's uniform comprises a Royal Blue school jacket (blazer), white shirt/blouse, black trousers/skirt and tie (with house colours on).[14]
