Butler is a town[1] in and the county seat of Choctaw County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,952 at the 2000 census,[2] at which time it was a city.
History
When Choctaw County was formed in 1847, Butler was created as the county seat. The town was located and settled in 1848. It is named in honor of Colonel Pierce Butler, a soldier killed in the Mexican-American War.[3]
Geography
Butler is located at 32°5′29″N 88°13′14.46″W / 32.09139°N 88.2206833°W (32.091526, -88.220684)[4].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 5.6 square miles (15 km2), all land.[5]
Demographics
As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 1,952 people, 823 households, and 547 families residing in the city.[2] The population density was 348.6 inhabitants per square mile (134.6 /km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 168.8 per square mile (65.2 /km2).[5] The racial makeup of the city was 81.56% White, 17.88% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, and 0.31% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.[2]
There were 823 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.78.[2]
In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.5 males.[2]
The median income for a household in the city was $35,302, and the median income for a family was $43,056. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $20,700 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,221. About 13.3% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.4% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.[2]
