Butiama is a town in northern Tanzania and the birthplace of Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania. Butiama is one of the wards of the Musoma Rural District, and lies within the Mara Region; it is also the local residential area of the Wazanaki tribe which is believed to be the smallest tribe in the region. The Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Centre is located in the town. Butiama is also the home place of Hon. Nimrod Mkono, who is the member of Parliament of Musoma Rural and also is the home place of Maneno Hamis (a.k.a Hamis Junior), who is a student at Lindi High School. Butiama is 27 km. from Musoma town and 3 km. from Busegwe ward, the place where Major General Mtalima Kohi was born and is also the district in which Chief Ihunyo Girls High School is found. ,wanzagi secondary school,oswald mang"ombe boys high school,butuguri day secondary school,mbeza schools and others which build by hon mkono coperated with citizens
Several things have been named Butiama because of its significance to Tanzanian history, including the ferry MV Butiama that operates between Mwanza and Ukerewe.
