Burntisland railway station is a railway station in the town of Burntisland, Fife, Scotland. The station is managed by First ScotRail and is on the Fife Circle Line. The original neo - classical terminal station was opened by the Edinburgh, Perth, & Dundee Railway on 17 September 1847. The architect is unknown but the stone capitals are of similar design to those on the façade of the long demolished Edinburgh Canal Street Station. The present station was opened by the North British Railway on 2 June 1890 upon completion of their link from the recently constructed Forth bridge ~ it is a typical North British economy brick and wood structure. The opening of the Forth Bridge signalled the demise of one of the world's first train-ferries. The Granton Harbour to Burntisland service is claimed to be the first ~ see the accompanying picture.
Monday to Saturday the station generally sees a service provision of two trains per hour direct to Edinburgh (most continuing on to Newcraighall) in the up direction. In the down direction one train per hour terminates at Glenrothes and one per hour completes the "circle" running via Cowdenbeath & Dunfermline to terminate at Edinburgh. There is one peak hour service to Glasgow Queen Street via the Dalmeny - Winchburgh line with a corresponding return from Glasgow in the evening. In the evening there are fewer trains but most continue beyond Kirkcaldy all stops to Dundee. The last two ScotRail departures from Aberdeen also stop at Burntisland on their way to Edinburgh.
On Sundays there is a reduced service with one Fife Circle service to/from Edinburgh every two hours in each direction and one Edinburgh to Dundee stopping service every two hours in each direction. This gives an hourly service, all stops to both Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy from Burntisland.
