Burnt Mill Academy (Formerly known as Burnt Mill School - affectionately known as Burnt Mill) is situated on First Avenue in the south-west Essex town of Harlow. Burnt Mill School is built near the site of a mill that had burnt down, hence the name of the school and the surrounding area. In the coming academic year (Sept 2011- July 2012), Burnt Mill School will be holding celebrations year-round to celebrate 50 years since opening. (1962–2012). Plans are yet to be confirmed.
Admissions
Located near Harlow Town Park, Burnt Mill Academy is an 11-16 mixed academy of around 1200 students. It is a community academy and has specialist status in the Performing Arts (since 2003). At Burnt Mill, there are five houses that are named after famous and significant people, Cockcroft, Eliot, Hunt, Moore & Sheppard; there used to be a sixth house called Cheshire, there were talks of a Cheshire come back, and it has. Burnt Mill School's Students are affectionately known as 'Burnt Millers'. Burnt Mill academically remains one of two comprehensive institutes in the United Kingdom with outstanding pass rates on the GCSE results each year increasing.
From 1 December 2011, the establishment has gained academy status.
Academic performance
Burnt Mill School remains one of the top community institutions in the country. Burnt Mill School is the best academically in Harlow, and is in the top 25 percent of secondary schools nationally, with its most recent pass rate (August 2011) being 96% A*-C grades, this is also the best pass rate Burnt Mill School has ever achieved. An improvement on last year's result by 16%.[1]
