Projects and activities
BCR has been involved with many projects in the local community:
- BCR helps organise events throughout the Sheffield area; for example, it has worked in partnership with Biggafish, a youth organisation based in London devoted to the education of young people through music,[2] and organised the Sheffield part of their anniversary tour at the O2 Academy.
- BCR is involved with many charities, including Families Relief.
- BCR creates education, employment and training opportunities in the local area. For example, in 2010 the station ran a Media Training course, designed to give unemployed adults the skills they need to succeed in a career in media, and has employed a batch of workers for 2010-2011 in partnership with the Future Jobs Fund and the Centre For Full Employment.
- BCR's Young Voices project allows young people, from primary school age up to university students, to get their voice on the radio. Recently it worked with Foxhill Primary to record some jingles, and with another primary school to record anti-bullying, anti-gun, gang and knife crime messages.
- BCR advertises and promotes local businesses, organisations and events for a low price. It also actively promotes itself, through its social networking sites and promotional days. It has a quarterly newsletter, named BCR Vibez.
Sumfest UK
Burngreave Community Radio initiated the idea of organising the Sumfest UK, a music festival in Sheffield in summer 2012.[3] The name "Sumfest UK" was inspired by the annual Reggae Sumfest festival in Jamaica, but the 'Sumfest UK' event is planned to cater for a wider range of musical tastes as possible, and will feature local, national and international artists playing from many different genres. The first Sumfest UK Festival called Peace, Love & Unity Festival unfolded at Abbeyfield Park Burngreave Road Sheffield S4 7AT 1-8pm on Sunday 29 July 2012. This event coincides with the Launch of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Re-branding
In Late 2011, it was agreed by members to re-brand Burngreave Community Radio (BCR).
