Bukedea District is a district in Eastern Uganda. It's named after its 'chief town', Bukedea, where the district headquarters are located.
Location
Bukedea District is bordered by Kumi District to the west and north, Bulambuli District to the east, Sironko District and Mbale District to the southeast, and Pallisa District to the south.[1] The district headquarters at Bukedea are located approximately 79 kilometres (49 mi), by road, southeast of Soroti, the largest city in Teso sub-region.[2] The coordinates of the district are:01 21N, 34 03E.
Overview
Bukedea District was created by Act of the Ugandan Parliament, in 2006 and became operational on 1 July 2007. Prior to that the district was part of Kumi District. Bukedea District, together with Amuria District, Kaberamaido District, Katakwi District, Kumi District and Soroti District is part of the Teso sub-region, home to an estimated 2.5 million people of Iteso and Kumam ethnicities.
Population
The national census in 2002 estimated the population of the district at about 122,500.[3] The annual population growth rate in the district is 3.3%. Using those statistics, it is estimated that the population of Bukedea District in 2010 was approximately 158,900. See table below:
