Badaun is the only city in Badaun district,[1] Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located near the Ganges river.[2] in the center of Western Uttar Pradesh. It is only 3 hours 50 mins and 226 km from New Delhi.[3] Budaun is a Yadav and Muslim dominated region. It was the most important post of Northern Frontier during Mughal reign. Budaun is a big market, historically famous and religiously important city. It is the heart of Rohilkhand. [4][5]Badaun is 229 km from New Delhi and it takes 3 hours 55 mins to reach there. [6] Yet not exactly a tourist destination still attracts thousands of people annually. Every year it is estimated that 1.5 lac to 2 lac people visit the city in which most people come to visit Ziyarats. Budaun is one of the fewest cities included in 3 of 4 tourist circuits of Uttar pradesh. Budaun is much famous among the Barelwi sectors of muslims and this is due to the presence of hundreds of martyrs(Shaheed) and Saints who are there in its soil, resting in peace. Budaun is infact one of the oldest existing settlement of India, and always have been place of Interest for Indian rulers, as Iltutmish's period made Budaun the capital of its empire or Mediviel India.
Etymology
Its been described by Prof. Goti John that this city was named Bedamooth in an ancient inscription (stone scripts, at Lucknow Museum). Then this region was called Panchal. According to the lines on stone scripts there was a village Bhadaunlak near the city. A Muslim historian Roz Khan Lodhi said that here Ashoka The Great built a Buddh Vihar and Quila and he named it BuddhMau. According to George Smith, Budaun was named after Ahir prince Budh.[7][8]
Geography
Badaun has an average elevation of 169 metres (554 feet). It has normal rainfall levels. Since Budaun was settled after demolishing a large fort, the city is irregularly elevated, with Sotha and Punjabi Mohalla at the top. The Civil Lines are is much plainer.
Badaun is the tropical region. Its average temperature is approximately 30 °C. There is widespread greenery. The climatic conditions are suitable for agriculture; the crops production from this area is larger.

Dharmendra Yadav is the MP of the Budaun Constituency and is the nephew of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The constituency has over 3.5 lakh Yadavs and 3 lakh Muslims. The SC voters also number over 1.5 lakh. Next are Shakyas, who are also over 1.5 lakh. Budaun city comes under mainly Budaun lok sabha seat and partly in Aonla lok sabha seat. The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica wrote of Buduan:
"A town and district of British India, in the Rohilkhand division of the United Provinces. The town is near the left bank of the river Sot. Pop. (1901) 39,031. There are ruins of an immense fort and a very handsome mosque of imposing size, crowned with a dome, and built in 1223. The American Methodist mission maintains several girls schools, and there is a high school for boys. According to tradition, Badaun was founded about 905 AD, and an inscription, probably of the 12th century, gives a list of twelve Rathor kings reigning at Badaun (called Vodamayuta). The first authentic historical event connected with it, however, was its capture by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1196, after which it became a very important post on the northern frontier of the Delhi empire. In the 13th century two of its governors, Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, the builder of the great mosque referred above, and his son Rukn ud din Firuz, attained the imperial throne. In 1571 the town was burnt, and about a hundred years later, under Shah Jahan, the seat of the governorship was transferred to Sahaspur- Bilari."
