Brest is a village in the Municipality of Ig in central Slovenia, just south of the capital Ljubljana. The entire municipality is part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola and is now included in the Central Slovenia Statistical Region.[2]
Name
Brest was attested in written sources in 1330 as Fraezzen (and as Vrezzen circa 1330 and Brezzt in 1401). The name is derived from the Slovene common noun brest 'elm', referring to the local vegetation.[3]
Church
The local church, built on the eastern outskirts of the settlement, is dedicated to Saint Andrew and belongs to the Parish of Tomišelj. It was built in the early 17th century and extensively rebuilt in the early 18th century.[4]
