Breg pri Ribnici (pronounced [ˈbreːk pri ˈriːbnitsi]; German: Willingrain[2]) is a settlement northwest of the town of Ribnica in southern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.[3]

Name

The name of the settlement was changed from Breg to Breg pri Ribnici in 1953.[4] In the 19th century the German name was Willingrain.[2]

Castle

Very little remains of the castle that used to dominate the southern end of the settlement. It is first mentioned as an estate in written documents dating to 1241. The castle itself was built in the mid 15th century. By 1810 it was in a very dilapidated state and building material from the castle was used in contemporary buildings in Ribnica.[5]
