Braxton Family Values is an American reality television series that airs on WE tv and premiered on April 12, 2011.[1] It chronicles the lives of Braxton sisters — Grammy Award-winning artist Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar — and their mother, Evelyn.[2]

Production

In January 2011, WE tv confirmed that it had signed Toni Braxton for a reality series, entitled Braxton Family Values, which is marketed as one of the network's flagship shows.[3] In its first four airings, Braxton Family Values averaged a 0.63 household rating, attracting 350,000 women in the 18-49 demographic, three times WE tv’s average in the Tuesday 9 PM slot.[4] This lead the network to renew the series for a 13 episode second season.[5][6] In July 2011, WE tv added ordered an additional episodes for season two — bring the season to a total of 26 episodes.[7] At the time of its premiere, the second season ranked as the No.1 telecast for W18-34 and No.3 for W25-54 during primetime among all ad-supported cable.[8] The series also ranked as the No.1 show among African-American viewers during primetime for all key women and adult demo deliveries, and No.1 across all key women’s demos during primetime – W18-34, W18-49 and W25-54 – among all women’s networks.[8] The series' sole spin-off, Tamar & Vince, was green-lit to series on December 19, 2011.[9] In July 2012, WE tv renewed the show for a third season that debuted on March 14, 2013.[10][11][12] The third season returned on November 14, 2013.[13][14] The second half of season three resumes where the series left off prior to its hiatus, with Traci discovering that her husband may have cheated on her.[13] Trina facing her own marital troubles and makes the decision to file for a divorce from her husband.[13] Towanda is in celebration mode as she approaches a milestone birthday.[13] Toni is in the midst of a career rebirth as she finishes up her new album "Love Marriage & Divorce" with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and prepares for her first tour in over five years.[13] Tamar has launched her album "Love and War", will be starting a tour, and is taking care of her newborn son.[13]

Toni Michelle Braxton was born October 7, 1967 in Severn, Maryland as the first daughter of Michael and Evelyn Braxton. As she grew older, Toni became inspired by the greats such as Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. Her mother's religious teachings eventually contributed to Toni's musical style as well. She discovered her singing talents as a member of the church choir, which her mother founded. Although Toni knew she wanted to pursue a singing career, she also received a college education at Bowie State University. While studying to be a teacher, Toni never gave up music. She continued singing lessons to fulfill her true passion in life. Remaining true to their love for music, Toni and her sisters formed a group called The Braxtons. Their first single "The Good Life" managed to catch the ear of Babyface and Antonio "L.A." Reid," of LaFace Records. "The Good Life" was good enough for Toni's career, as it led to her record contract with LaFace. Toni’s singles such as "Give U My Heart" (a duet with Babyface) and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" both appeared on the Billboard charts. Her debut album, the self-entitled "Toni Braxton," was released in 1993 and spawned the hits "Another Sad Love Song," "You Mean The World To Me" and "Breathe Again." Her critically acclaimed album and sultry style earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1993. She released a follow-up album, "Secrets".

The song "Un-Break My Heart" is considered Toni’s biggest international single. Toni also contributed to another soundtrack: the female bonding film Waiting to Exhale. Toni has also had a successful run with her show, Toni Braxton Revealed, which took place in Las Vegas. Toni has sold over 60 million albums and singles and has starred in two Disney Broadway hit shows, Beauty and the Beast and Aida. Along with all her accomplishments, six Grammy awards she also has managed to be mother of two boys and the spokesperson for Autism Speaks. Toni released the lead single "I Heart You" from her untitled upcoming seventh studio album on iTunes on March 29, 2012.[15] It was written and produced by Toni Braxton and Keri Lewis (her ex-Husband). "I Heart You" charted at number 1 on the Billboard US Hot Dance Club Songs for the week of June 15, 2012.[16] Toni was due to release a second single from her untitled album before the end of 2012, but she was hospitalized for complications arising from lupus in December 2012. Her doctors have said she will "do just fine and recover completely," and stress that the incident is "just a side effect of living with lupus.[17]

Tamar Braxton

Tamar Estine Braxton was born March 17, 1977, and is the youngest of the Braxton children. Tamar knew as early as 3 years old that she wanted to be on the stage. Tamar started singing background for her sister, Toni, at age 11. She was also a member of the sisters' group "The Braxtons". Tamar released her debut album Tamar (album) in 2000 via Dreamworks Records. While writing and actively singing on Toni’s albums, Tamar began working closely with "super producer"/music executive Vincent Herbert. The two married in the fall of 2008. Despite the portrayal of her singing career on the show, while still being a well sought after background singer, Tamar signed a new deal with her husband's record label and is working on her second album. She has one son with Vincent Herbert, named Logan Vincent Herbert. Along with working on her own music, Tamar also was a featured background vocalist in Lady Gaga's "Born This Way". At the Braxton Family Reunion, Wendy Williams announced that other than Toni, Tamar was voted the Favorite Braxton for the second season in a row.

Tamar released her first single "Love and War" on December 6, 2012, via iTunes.[18][19] Within hours of its release, "Love and War" shot to the top of the US iTunes chart. Lady Gaga’s co-sign helped push “Love and War” to No. 1 on the iTunes charts. Gaga asked her 31+ million fans on Twitter to support Tamar admitting she never promotes other artists:

“ K I NEVER PROMOTE ARTISTS but if u want your mind blown check @tamarbraxtonher “Love & War” She’s Toni Braxton sister + her voice is BEYOND.[20] ”

Selling 84,000 downloads in its first week of release, it debuted at number 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs chart, also claiming "Hot Shot Debut honors" when it debuted at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her first appearance on the chart. "Love and War" also became her first top 20 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, at number 13 and first number 1 on the Heatseekers Songs chart.[21] In its second week, the song fell to number 97 on the Hot 100 chart.[22]

Traci Braxton

Traci Renee Braxton was born April 2, 1972, the 3rd child and second daughter born to Michael and Evelyn Braxton. She is a writer and singer. Due to her decision to settle down and start a family early in life, Traci missed out on the opportunity of being a part of "The Braxtons" group, as the label refused her because she was pregnant. Traci lives in Maryland with her husband, Kevin and her son, Kevin Jr. Traci is a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She is the host of her own radio/television show called The Traci Braxton Show on Blis.FM.

Towanda Braxton

(Season 1 - present) The Responsible One
Towanda Chloe Braxton was born on September 18, 1973, the 4th child and third daughter. Even though Towanda and her siblings were reared in the church singing, Towanda knew she wanted to spread her wings and become a trailblazer in her own right as an entertainer. Towanda studied music education at Bowie State University and is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Towanda played the role as Lorelle in the off Broadway play Dreamgirls. Although in the past Towanda was a part of "The Braxtons" album with Tamar and Trina in 1996, she is searching for more in the world of entertainment. Towanda was a main character on the second season of Starting Over. Towanda resides in Atlanta, Georgia with two small children and her husband, Andre. She is working closely with Toni in her business affairs and singing background.

Trina Braxton

(Season 1 - present) The Party Girl
Trina Evelyn Braxton, the 5th child/4th daughter, was born December 3, 1974. She is an actress and singer. She starred in Tyler Perry’s play Meet the Browns. As well as being an actress, Trina started singing with her sisters when she was a pre-teen. While she was in the group, she discovered her passion for songwriting and modeling. Trina is married to Gabriel Solis. They reside in Atlanta, Georgia with their sons, Eric (1994) and Caleb (1997). Trina finds herself singing background for sister, Toni, and contributing vocals for a wedding band called "Simply Irresistible". In addition, Trina also juggles her busy schedule as mom and wife, with her career as singer and aspiring actress. Now that Trina’s children are all grown-up she enjoys her "me time" by partaking in the nightlife scene.

Trina released her debut single "Party or Go Home" on March 26, 2012 on iTunes.[23] The music video premiered on her YouTube channel on September 14, 2012, and on her Vevo channel in October 9, 2012.[24][25] Trina is signed to SolTri Entertainment LLC.[26][18] Trina is set to release her 'EP' titled Time of My Life at the end of February early March 2013.[27][28]

Evelyn Braxton

Evelyn Braxton (born January 14, 1948) was an operatic singer at one time.

Along with his estranged wife, Lewis is active with Autism Speaks, using his celebrity to raise money for a cure to the neurodevelopmental disorder. Although a member of the family and cast, Lewis is rarely seen on camera due to his choice to be a recurring member. Lewis and Braxton announced their separation in 2009, although they still co-parent their children and remain great friends.

  • Michael Braxton, Sr. (Braxton sisters' father and Evelyn's ex-husband) —Evelyn and her Reverend husband, Michael Sr., were married for nearly 35 years when Evelyn discovered that her husband (and father to all 6 of her children) was having a relationship outside of their marriage that had spanned over 9 years. She later divorced him. Reverend Michael Braxton remarried, within 60 days of his divorce, to the woman he had cheated on his wife with.
